Anapurna claims Classic honours for Meon Valley Stud

ANAPURNA (GB) on Friday provided the British breeding industry with a huge result when she won the Investec Oaks at Epsom.

The daughter of mighty stallion FRANKEL (GB) showed true grit in the hands of Frankie Dettori with a neck defeat of Irish raider Pink Dogwood.

Anapurna is trained by John Gosden and owned and bred by influential Hampshire operation Meon Valley Stud, who also bred the Classic heroine’s dam, DASH TO THE TOP (GB).

Meon Valley Stud have over the years been responsible for such luminaries like MILLIGRAM (GB), IZZI TOP (GB), SHIROCCO STAR (GB) and SPEEDY BOARDING (GB) – all of whom, like Anapurna, raced in the distinctive black and white silks of Helena Springfield Ltd.

Indeed, Meon Valley will also have intense focus upon the Investec Derby at Epsom on Saturday as they bred TELECASTER (GB), winner of the Dante Stakes at York and supplemented for the premier Classic of the British Flat season.

Anapurna is a half-sister to the Group-placed DYNASTY (GB), who was trained by Aidan O’Brien, VERY DASHING (GB), SEAGULL STAR (GB) and DEEP SOUTH (GB).

Her Oaks triumph also provided Frankel with a first British Classic success as a sire.

Mark Weinfeld, managing partner for Meon Valley Stud, said:

“It was the toughest ever performance – it really was.

“We’ve come close a few times but she’s really shown the way – it’s incredible.

“This is unbelievable. This is what we live for – this is what we dream of.

“When you think you start your matings four years before today, to see it actually reach fruition is just an unbelievable feeling.

“She won her trial (at Lingfield) very well but we didn’t know how good she was and how she would handle the course, but she did it nicely.

“We sell a lot of what we produce, but this is a broodmare for the future.

“I think I’ll have a large glass of champagne later.”
